THE 31 WOMEN COLLECTION
In 1943, Peggy Guggenheim created a first of its kind art exhibition while in exile during WW2. With little recognition, Exhibition By 31 Women was the first documented all-female exhibition in the United States that brought together 31 artists. Some were established while others were names that had not, and have not, yet emerged from obscurity.
The 31 Women Collection works to sharpie this historic event and these incredible artists into history. Today, over 150 works of fine art and 50+ pieces of ephemera of the 31 Women artists have been collected. In May 2023 a week long exhibition was presented to celebrate the 80th anniversary. One piece from each of the artists was brought to the original location of the 1943 exhibition to be presented to the public for 31 hours!
Since the debut of The 31 Women Collection, works from the collection have been included in Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered at Cantor Arts Center at Stanford (September 2023-January 2024) and 31 Mujeres at Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid, Spain (September 2024-January 2025). The latter exhibition has traveled to MAC/CCB in Lisbon, Portugal for 31 Mulheres, on view now through June 29, 2025.
Other contributions from The 31 Women Collection are currently on display in 1924. Otros Surrealismos at Fundación MAPFRE (now through May 11, 2025) and I AM LEONOR FINI at Palazzo Reale in Milan, Italy (now through June 22, 2025).
Through these global exhibitions, The 31 Women Collection continues its mission of amplifying the voices of female artists, rewriting art history, and inspiring new generations worldwide.
